The Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival is coming up in a few weeks.
I thought it’d be a good idea to chat to some of the brewers, so you have a better idea of where to get started on the 14th of October. Here’s what the guys from Birkenhead Brewery had to say.
MT: How long have you been brewing?
BB: 8 years
MT: Any type of formal training in brewing science or art? If not, how did you learn the craft?
BB: No. It started in a garage and grew to quite an expensive hobby. Attending brewing workshops, conferences, buying and reading up on all written material on the subject I could find and obviously brewing as much as I could for events and functions. Brewing with other brewers and sampling as much variety beer as possible.
MT: What are your favourite styles? Do you get to work on them at your current brewery?
BB: I love all beer styles but would probably have to single out Belgian styles. We have a Belgian Pale Ale at the moment, but I would like to venture into more complex Belgian beers. We’ll see.
MT: Have you ever had a bad batch? If so, how long did it take you to figure out what caused it?
BB: Obviously. It has been some time since that batch and I can’t quite remember what was wrong.
MT: Can you give a hint if anything might be coming from your brewery specifically for the festival?
BB: A German favourite.
MT: What’s the weirdest ingredient you have ever put in beer?
BB: Nothing too extreme. Stuff like pumpkin, allspice, honey, cocoa, etc.
MT: If you had to pick a favorite beer from the brewery and offer it to a stranger, which one would it be and why?
BB: Difficult to say without knowing the stranger’s preferred styles and taste. The Honey Blonde is a tried and tested champion, so I’ll go with that.
MT: If you could sit down with anyone (living or dead) and have a beer, who would it be and why? What would be the first question you would ask them?
BB: I would ask renowned explorer Mike Horn to take me on his next adventure.
MT: If you were omnipotent, what would you change (first) to improve our beer universe?
BB: Get more people knowledgeable about beer – the product and the culture around it.
MT: Any advice for those aspiring (kitchen/homebrew) future pro brewers out there?
BB: I guess just love what you do and don’t be afraid to experiment.
