Huawei P30

First Impressions on the Huawei P30 Series

Huawei P30 Series: Price and Scope:

The Huawei P30 Series, along with the Huawei P30 Smartphone collection, recently launched in South Africa. From a consumer point of view, the aim of Huawei has always been to provide advanced consumer technology at an affordable price bracket for the market.

This latest edition of Huawei technology definitely does that and begins to dig the brand deeper into the peripheral market too, with products such as the: Huawei Mini Bluetooth Speaker and the Huawei FreeLace. Further building out the Huawei smart device ecosystem (everyone loves a good ecosystem)

In addition, Huawei also launched updated iterations of the Huawei Matebook 13 and the Huawei T5 (their new tablet), and very stylish Huawei Watch GT.

Huawei P30 Smartphone First Impressions Review:

The Huawei P30 Smartphone is easily the best Android smartphone in the market right now (within an African market at any rate), providing the balance between advanced smartphone technology and price, the Huawei P30, in my opinion, knocks-off the Samsung S10, as South Africa’s preferred smartphone, or at least it will when sales reflect consumer sentiment.

I do ramble on about my first impressions of the Huawei P30 and it’s connected device line in my Fresh Tech Review here if you want to watch someone ramble on about Huawei for far too long:

Huawei P30 Camera:

Huawei has always attempted to create the best camera experience possible, all the way since the Huawei P8 and Huawei Mate 7 devices, cameras were always the bragging point of the Huawei smartphone brand.

…this camera is an absolute beast!

The P30 is no different; complete with an industry leading Huawei ToF Camera in the Huawei P30 Pro allows for 3D photography possibilities, including gaming and a 3D Live Maker for AR modeling.

This camera facilitates the simulation of premium wide aperture effects, accurate portrait segmentation, and multi-level bokeh, creating photos with many distinct layers and an improved sense of depth.

Starting with a 50 times zoom, and a 10MP telephoto lens, this camera is an absolute beast and begins beating up on Nokia’s over the top camera goals. This SuperZoom allows users to achieve a high-fidelity 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom, and 50x digital zoom. The lens uses a prism to bend light at a 90-degree angle, enabling users to see farther.

Huawei P30 Camera Specs:

The Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro use a large 1/1.7-inch RYYB sensor for their primary camera.

This sensor is different from other CFAs, as it replaces green pixels in the RGGB Bayer array with yellow pixels, which means both green and red light can move past the filter and reach the sensor. This improves the amount of light reaching the sensor by up to 40 percent, yielding higher photosensitivity and more intensity of colour.

The Huawei P30 has an aperture of f/1.8 with a maximum ISO of 204,800.

The main camera on the Huawei P30 Pro features an even wider aperture of f/1.6 with OIS support and a maximum ISO of 409,600, achieving greater light sensitivity, better low noise capture and improved colour reproduction, even in low light conditions.

Huawei P30 Features:

It would be remiss of me not to include the other various features of the Huawei P30, they’re what you expect from a smartphone these days, but hey, some of these are nice touches, like the Huawei Wireless Quick Charge and Wireless Reverse Charge (perfect for a toothbrush or a vibrator):

  • The Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro are powered by the Kirin 980, Huawei’s latest and most powerful smartphone chipset for better performance and efficiency.
  • The Huawei P30 Pro features a large 4,200mAh battery that supports the 40W Huawei SuperCharge, along with 15W Huawei Wireless Quick Charge and Wireless Reverse Charge.
  • Smartphones in the Huawei P30 series come with high-performance Bluetooth that address poor audio issues.
  • Huawei P30 devices run on the latest EMUI 9.1 that uses a revolutionary Extendable Read-Only File System (EROFS) to boost system speed and increase efficiency.
  • The Huawei P30 Series is the first to feature GPU Turbo 3.0, which significantly optimizes gaming performance.
  • Huawei Share OneHop facilitates faster transferring of files from a Huawei P30 device to a Huawei PC through a simple tap.
  • The Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro also support smart car key, so you can link your phone to select BMW or Audi vehicles.

Huawei P30 Price South Africa:

In a nutshell, and in my opinion, the new Huawei P30 series is priced very competitively for an African market and is definitely competing with Samsung for the top Android device in Africa right now. At launch, the following prices were announced: (ZAR)

Huawei P30 – R13,999

Huawei P30 Pro – R18,999

Huawei P30 Lite – R5,999

Huawei P30 In a Nutshell:

Yes, I really like this smartphone, it’s an instant leader in the local smartphone market and is making waves across Africa. With its competitive price point, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t get the Huawei P30 Lite on a new contract, or just cash, it’s very affordable compared to your Samsung or iPhone (MyBroadband covers that I think), and I would purchase this series of devices if I was in the market right now.
